Engage 2007

Goldsworthy - Yorkshire Sculpture Park
Barbara Hepworth

Between the 21st and 23rd of November, Rachel (Timespan development director) and I attended the International Engage Conference 2007 in Bradford.

The event was mostly held in the National Media Museum and was attended by delegates from all over the country. It was a good opportunity to meet up with other practitioners and exchange notes. I didn’t think the any of the speakers were very interesting but the food was good. The ‘’break out’’ sessions were a bit more engaging. I attended the Gasworks session, hearing from collaborative artists Erika Arzt and Juan Linares and later, a session with artist Errol Francis in the Yorkshire Craft Space. The best thing to come out of these sessions was a free Triangle Residencies Directory.

The trip was worth it though as we were able to see some really interesting work. In particular the new film installation by the Quay Brothers in Leeds Art Gallery, the Andy Goldsworthy retrospective and James Turrel’s Sky Space sited at the Yorkshire Sculprure Park. We were also impressed by the Impressions Gallery located in the heart of the art district of Bradford, which in itself was great to see.

The Quay brothers film, ‘’She So Beloved’’ is a retelling of Monteverdi’s Orfeo, which was first staged in 1607 telling the classical story of love and loss where Orpheus enters the underworld to bring his deceased young bride Eurydice back to the world of the living.
